I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. A Little More...  ...on the upcoming season from the Rosenblatt Report (no link to the story and message board - paid subscription area). Here's some quotes from head coach Mike Weathers: "We practiced for 14 days and one of our goals was to see how well each player played after completing individual workouts. Overall, I thought the guys displayed an impressive work ethic with several freshmen standing out."According to Kendall Rogers at the Rosenblatt Report, the coaches were particularly impressed by the work of Andrew Carpenter and Vance Worley on the mound. That may be why LongBeachState.com has them penciled in as weekend starters. And as the above quote indicates, it sure looks like there's some healthy competition for playing time at catcher.
