Welcome

Welcome to Dirtbags Baseball blog! I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com.

Former Dirtbag Kacey Olenberger Earns Playoff Win - Jered Weaver, Cesar Ramos, Start Tonight - Other Former Dirtbags In Minor League Playoffs

Hat tip to reader Rhonda for pointing me to this piece at MinorLeagueBaseball.com:
Travelers take Game 2, 7-5
By Ben Hill / MLB.com

Kasey Olenberger got the outs when it mattered, allowing three runs over six innings as Arkansas defeated Tulsa, 7-5, on Wednesday night in game 2 of the Texas League Eastern Division playoffs.

Arkansas has won the first two games of the best-of-five series, as the Travelers took Tuesday's opener by a score of 6-2.

Olenberger (1-0) certainly didn't bring his "A" game to the mound on Wednesday, as he allowed 10 hits over his six innings of work. "I couldn't get the fastball down, and they took advantage of it," said the 27-year-old lefty. "It was damage control all night."

Nonetheless, Olenberger was scored upon in just one inning, the second. Sean Barker singled to lead off the frame and came home on Corey Slavik's double. Dan Conway and Jayson Nix then hit-back-to-back singles, the latter of which scored Slavik. Two batters later, Jordan Czarniecki's base hit plated Conway with the inning's third and final run. [more].
It will be back-to-back former Dirtbag starters (from the Arkansas Travelers website):
The Travs go for the sweep of the series Thursday night at Ray Winder Field. Arkansas has RHP Jered Weaver (3-3, 3.98 ERA) going against Tulsa RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (2-5, 5.43 ERA).
In other playoff action, Neil Jamison pitched a scoreless inning, striking out 2 and allowing 1 hit, in the Fort Wayne Wizards opening playoff loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class A Midwest League) [Box Score]. Cesar Ramos (3-2, 4.19 in the regular season) starts for Fort Wayne tonight. And in California League playoff action, Troy Tulowitzki went 2 for 5, and scored a run, in the Modesto Nuts victory over Stockton [Box Score].

Todd Jennings and John Bowker, both with the California League's San Jose Giants, won't see playoff action until Saturday.

Update...or should I say oops: I left out Edgar Varela, who went 2 for 4, with an RBI, in his Lancaster JetHawks' win over High Desert last night. He's not a former Dirtbag, but former UCR Highlander A. J. Shappi got the win. [Box Score].
