I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Who Else Is Hot? In addition to Todd Jennings and John Bowker, these former Dirtbags are on a roll: Edgar Varela went 5 for 5 last Monday, and is hitting .522 over his last 6 (Lancaster's last 10) games (playing for the Adv. A Cal. League Lancaster JetHawks [Diamondbacks]). He is 12 for 23 over the stretch, with 8 RBI and 6 runs scored. Paul McAnulty is tearing up the Pacific Coast League, hitting .359 over his last 10 games (14 for 39), and .340 (32 for 94) in the 23 games since his promotion to the Portland Beavers [Padres] from AA Mobile. In those 23 games he also has 3 HR, 8 doubles, 14 RBI, and is slugging at .521. I sure won't be surprised to see him at San Diego again soon. Kevin Randel is 8 for 18 (.444) over his last 5 games, and 10 for 27 over his last 8 for the Adv. A Florida State League (FSL) Jupiter Hammerheads [Marlins]. Adam Heether is 12 for 31 (.386), with 9 RBI, over his last 10 games for the FSL Brevard County Mantees [Brewers]. Over Neil Jamison's last 5 appearances he has recorded 4 saves without allowing a run, and opponents are batting .063 (1 for 16). Over the stretch, he's struck out 7 in 5 IP, without walking a batter. Kirk Pierce is hitting .688 (11 for 16) over his last 5 games, and .500 (15 for 30) over his last 10 for the Sioux Falls Canaries [Independent Northern League]. Over the last 10 he has 3 HR and 6 RBI. Brad Davis, hitting .210 on the season after an injury, is hitting .308 (8 for 26 with 1 HR) over his last 7 games, playing for the Greensboro Grasshoppers [Marlins] in the Class A South Atlantic League.
