Former Dirtbag Brad Davis Interviewed In Greensboro Paper

Q: Give me a thumbnail description of Mission Viejo.

A: It's located right in between Los Angeles and San Diego. It's extremely populated; there's not a square foot without houses on it. There's a regulation that you have to have eight feet between each house and there's exactly eight feet between houses. It's got everything you need. I went to (college) at Long Beach State, which is 30 minutes away, and I had never been there.

Q: Besides your family, what do you miss the most?

A: The beaches are unbelievable. I lived five minutes away and grew up surfing and body-boarding. When I go back, I go to the beach every chance I can. When I'm home, if I'm having a bad day, I can go to the beach for an hour and be completely at ease. It's a real stress-reliever.

Q: How tough is it to learn to surf and how good are you?

A: It's something you can't go out and pick up instantly. Surfing became a real passion of mine when I was 10 or 11. I'm probably an average surfer, but I'm definitely better at body-boarding.

Q: Do you get kidded by your teammates about the "surfer dude" image?

A: Not really. There are (five) other guys on the team from California, but they're all from Northern California so they can't really relate to surfing. The water is a lot colder where they're from. The other catcher on the team, Trent D'Antonio, grew up in a surfing community in Australia, so we have some things in common to talk about.

Q: Were you a baseball fan growing up?

A: There are three major-league teams within an hour-and-a-half (Dodgers, Angels and Padres). I was a Padres fan growing up. I was born in San Diego and my dad was from there. I met Tony Gwynn once when I played on a summer league team with his son. That was a dream come true.

Q: What's the weather like in Mission Viejo?

A: In the winter it gets into the 50s, but if you wear a sweat shirt you're fine. It doesn't rain much. It gets into the 100s in the summer, but there's not much humidity, so it doesn't take as much out of you as it does here. All you have to do here is walk outside and you start sweating.

Brad should check in at home. I'm posting this at 8:30 a.m., and according to Weather Underground.com the current temperature at Mission Viejo is 67.5 degrees, with 98% humidity!
