Welcome to Dirtbags Baseball blog! I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at

Don "Herman" Barbara Heads To Sac State

Here's the Sacramento State release on original Dirtbag, and former LBSU Assistant Coach, Don "Herman" Barbara:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - With the Sacramento State baseball program entering its first year in a new conference, head coach John Smith has brought in Don Barbara to serve as his new assistant in the Hornets' quest for the 2006 Western Athletic Conference championship, it was announced today.

Barbara, who spent seven years as an assistant coach at Long Beach State (1997-99, 2001-04) will serve as the Hornets' third base and hitting coach. His duties will also include instructing the infield and assisting Smith with all aspects of recruiting.

"Don brings a wealth of baseball experience to our program," Smith said. "He will add a lot of new energy and enthusiasm."

Sacramento State, who has competed independently the past three years (2003-05), is moving into the WAC as an affiliate member for the 2006 season and Barbara's extensive baseball experience will be a tremendous acquisition for a program looking to rebound from a 20-36-1 season in 2005.

"As a former assistant at Long Beach State, Don coached in a high profile program and conference," Smith said. "He has established recruiting connections all over the state of California which will be a big help to our program in the recruiting process."

Most recently, Barbara helped Long Beach State as it enjoyed the success of a 37-22 season and hosted its third-straight playoff series. The Dirtbags also had two players selected in the first round of the MLB draft.

Serving mainly as the hitting and third base coach while at Long Beach State, Barbara also instructed first basemen and outfielders while dealing with all aspects of recruiting. He saw the Dirtbags reach the Super Regionals in both 2003 (41-20) and 2004 (40-21).

Barbara's time at Long Beach State spanned three decades. A member of the Long Beach Hall of Fame, he was one of the original Dirtbags on the 1989 team. An All-American first baseman for two seasons, Barbara was selected as the Big West Player of the Year and Division I Hitter of the Year in 1990 after batting .474 with 102 hits, 69 runs and 27 doubles.

Prior to his coaching career, Barbara spent six seasons (1990-1996) in professional baseball after being drafted in the 24th round by the then-California Angels. He reached as high as Triple AAA and played for the Red Sox, Dodgers, Brewers and Angels. In 1994, Barbara batted .352 for the Pacific Coast Champion Albuqurque Dukes.

Barbara has also held other coaching positions including spending two summers (1997, 1998) as the manager of the Long Beach Aces of the Women's Professional Fast Pitch League. He also coached the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaska Summer League in the summer of 1999.
