I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Next Up, UCSB ![]() The LongBeachState.com weekly release on the series this weekend at UC Santa Barbara is here in html, and here in pdf. Here's their scouting report on the Gauchos: A Look at UC Santa Barbara: The Gauchos enter the weekend at 19-25 and 1-8 in the Big West, and are currently seventh in the Big West... UCSB has lost the last seven straight, after getting swept by Cal Poly and CS Fullerton the last two weekends... the Gauchos have struggled with injuries this season with starting infielders Chris Malec and Chris Valaika (a member of Team USA last summer) both missing time this year... veteran outfielder Matt Wilkerson leads the club with nine homers and 39 RBIs, while hitting .320, while freshman designated hitter Matt Aidem is batting .356 with 24 RBIs in 28 starts this year... the team is hitting .261 and fielding at a .966 clip... on the mound, the Gauchos have a 5.15 ERA as righthanders Michael Martin (4-5, 4.65), Andy Graham (4-5, 5.75) and Steve Morlock (4-7, 6.28) have made a majority of their starts... spot starter Loren Fraser is 3-4 with a 4.53 ERA, while Alex McRobbie is amongst the nation's leaders in saves with nine to go along with a 3.25 ERA... Bob Brontsema is in his 12th year as a head coach at UCSB... in last year's series, the Gauchos swept The Beach at Blair Field as Malec hit a grand slam off of Jered Weaver in the opener and then took the Sunday finale in 10 innings... LBSU had won two of three from the Gauchos in 2002 and 2003.Chris Malec's situation is heart rending. Three weeks ago he underwent surgery for testicular cancer. Here's a nice feature in the Orange County Register on Chris. It seems the prognosis is good. I heard he and his parents were in the stands at Fullerton last week as his team played the Titans, and he seemed to be doing well. I'm sure he can use all our prayers.
