I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Draft Prognostications Start Rolling In ![]() Bryan Smith, in these WTNY pieces on The Baseball Analysts, takes a look at the best college hitters and pitchers eligible for the June, 2005, draft. Here's his comments on Troy Tulowitzki, who he ranks among the top 3 draft eligible shortstops with Tyler Greene (Georgia Tech) and Cliff Pennington (Texas A&M): Top to bottom, the shortstops are in an intense battle with third basemen for the most talented position on this list. It all starts with Troy Tulowitzki, the Long Beach State shortstop that my partner Mr. Lederer has been boasting for two years. Troy has a .301 ISO this season, despite playing in an extreme pitcher's park in Blair Field. His power, teamed with his size (6-3) and arm (Big West's best) have drawn comparisons to former Dirtbag Bobby Crosby for years. He doesn't walk as much as his fellow shortstops, but Tulo has just about everything else to offer a Major League team.Bryan ranks Cesar Ramos among the elite left handed starting pitchers available, ranking him among Fullerton's Ricky Romero, Tulane's Brian Bogusevic and Vanderbilt's Ryan Mullins. He passes along Rich Lederer's comments on Cesar from earlier this year: Ramos, who has been likened to former Dirtbag and current Red Sox lefty Abe Alvarez, has big shoes to fill. The preseason All-American has been designated as the team's Friday night starter, an honor previously bestowed on last year's College Player of the Year Jered Weaver. Ramos and Alvarez, who Theo Epstein was pleased to take with Boston's second-round pick in the 2003 draft, are both 6'2", 190-pound southpaws with exceptional control and command of their fastballs and off-speed pitches.Of the top 13 college hurlers in the draft, Bryan ranks Cesar 9th. And of the top 18 hitters available in June, he ranks Tulo second only to Nebraska 3rd baseman Alex Gordon.
