Welcome

Welcome to Dirtbags Baseball blog! I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com.

Dirtbags' RPI Jumps To 18th From 22nd

We are now getting down to the point in the season when RPI - Ratings Power Index - means something. It's one of the factors that the NCAA Division I committee uses to decide who gets into the Regionals, what their seeding will be, and who will host those Regionals. In 2003, when Long Beach State hosted a Regional for the time, it's RPI was 26th on May 4, 16th on May 11, 15th on May 18 and 12th on May 25 (where it ended up), according to Boyd's World. Boyd's World calculates psuedo-RPI's - the NCAA does not release the official RPIs. In 2003, the Regional sites were announced on May 25, and the teams and brackets the following day.

Fast forward to 2005. This season the Regional sites will be announced on May 30. The Dirtbags' highest RPI of the season was reached on April 10, when they stood at 17th. This week, they go from 22nd to 18th (immediately behind CS Fullerton, who sit at 17th). With 10 games left (3 at UCSB, 3 at home against Cal. Poly, 3 at Fullerton, and 1 at USC), a #1 seed and Regional host at Blair Field is within the grasp of the Beach. Many factors go into the selection, officially including performance over the last 10 games of the season. The RPIs of their 4 remaining regular season opponents are: UCSB 124th, Cal. Poly 67th, Fullerton 17th and USC 21st. Less than a sweep of UCSB would probably cost Long Beach State, dropping them a slot or two in RPI (as taking 2 of 3 from Pacific, and losing 1 to LMU did). But victories against Cal. Poly, Fullerton and USC will notch RPI up to where it needs to be to land the Beach a Blair Field Regional.

In the current rankings, the Dirtbags move up to 5th in Iterative Strength Ratings (ISR) from 6th, and remain 9th in Strength of Schedule (SOS).
