I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Dirtbags Lose Series 2-1 To UCSB ![]() Here are the links: Friday: Dirtbags 6, UCSB 8:I made the trip to Santa Barbara and had a great time...except for the outcome Friday and Saturday. The long ball was the killer in both losses, but especially on Saturday. Both days westerly winds were a factor. Especially Friday, when the wind blew hard. The Beach out homered UCSB on Saturday (4 to 3, with Sean Boatright, Brandon Godfrey, Chris Jones and Chuck Sindlinger hitting round trippers), but the difference was the number of men on base. Sean's homer was a 2 run shot, but the other Dirtbag homers were all good for only 1 run each. All 7 of the Gauchos runs scored on their 3 homers - a grand slam by Chris Malec, a 2 run shot and a solo homer. The line scored is pretty odd - 7 runs on 6 hits! The Beach never held a lead during the first two games as UCSB hit Dirtbags starters Cesar Ramos and Marco Estrada hard early. The opposition scored 7 runs in the 1st 3 innings on Friday, and 5 in the 1st 3 on Saturday. In each game, the Dirtbags battled back but came up just short - losing by 2 on Friday, and 1 on Saturday. The rally on Saturday had steam as the Beach scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th on back to back homers by Sean Boatright and Brandon Godfrey off Gaucho reliever Justin Segal, closing to within 1 run. UCSB then brought in their ace closer, Alex McRobbie (1-0, 2.93, 11 saves) to pitch the final 2.0 innings for the save. The decision to bring in Justin Segal was perplexing. A full side arm pitcher, he went 3.0 innings on Friday. The first time through the order in that first game, Beach hitters had difficulty reading him - most recorded pop up outs. But in the 9th inning Long Beach State hit him hard and scored 2 runs. Saturday, they picked up where they left off, with Sean and Brandon hitting the ball out of the park. Amazingly, in the late innings on Sunday, Segal was warming in the bullpen (though he never entered the game). Defense doesn't often get enough credit. I'd like to single out the play of Chuck Sindlinger yesterday. Jared Hughes went a strong 5.0 innings (3 hits, 7 strikeouts, 4 walks, 2 earned runs allowed), and it was the 5th inning before a ball left the infield. I don't keep a scorebook, but Chuck had to have had 7 or 8 grounders come his way. He showed tremendous range. He fielded one up the middle that went for an infield hit. There was no way I thought he would get to the ball. On a critical play late in the game, he charged forward to take a slow bouncer on the infield grass and fire out the runner at 1st. On another he ranged far towards 1st, and retired the runner. There is no baseball statistic for fielding success. Fielding percentage is only a record for the number of times a fielder doesn't make an error - which itself is the official scorer's opinion. All I can say is that Chuck played 2nd yesterday as well as I have seen it played. Relief pitching performed well this weekend, allowing only 1 earned run in 10.2 innings (Steve Hammond, 3.0 innings, no ERs; Donnie Hume, 3.2 innings, 1 ER; Matt Fitts, 1.0 inning, no ERs; Brian Anderson, 2.1 innings, no ERs (1 unearned); and Neil Jamison, 1.2 innings, no ERs). Neil was credited with the win on Sunday for his 4th win against no losses. Sean Boatright extended his hitting streak to 26 games, 2 behind the Long Beach State record held by Todd Jennings (2003) and Rob Townley (1979). Sean went 4 for 5 on Friday. The Dirtbags are now 2 games behind Fullerton in the Big West Conference race, and 1/2 game behind Cal. Poly. Long Beach and Fullerton each have 6 Big West games left to play, while Cal. Poly has 9. Cal. Poly comes to Blair Field this weekend, and the Beach travels to Fullerton the following weekend.
