I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. Dirtbag Starting Pitchers Have Been World Beaters  Long Beach State's weekend starting pitching trio has been nothing short of amazing as the Beach has gone 5-1 against CS Fullerton and UC Riverside. In two starts apiece, Cesar Ramos, Marco Estrada and Jared Hughes have put together some pretty impressive combined numbers: 46.2 innings pitched, 42 strikeouts, only 7 walks and 7 earned runs allowed, and holding opponents to a .169 batting average. Their cumulative earned run average is 1.35! On two successive Fridays, Cesar has pitched 18.0 innings in back-to-back complete games. He has allowed a total of 3 earned runs, for a 1.50 ERA. Opponents have hit just .150 against him, as he struck out nearly 1 per inning (17 in 18.0), walking only 3. Marco, who has not been involved in the decision in either his start against Fullerton or Riverside, has allowed 2 earned runs over 12.2 innings, for a 1.42 ERA. He's also walked 3, and has struck out 13 (1.03 per inning). And Jared has been phenomenal on Sundays. After pitching a complete game against Fullerton, he came back to pitch 7.0 against Riverside. In each outing, he gave up only 1 earned run, yielding a 1.13 ERA. He's struck out 12 over those 16.0 innings, and walked just 1 batter. Opposing hitters have managed only a .130 batting average (7 for 54).
