I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. Jeremy Reed A Real Dirtbag  From the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (real the entire article here): "New Rainier a 'dirtbag' Reed known for his all-out play at each stop in minors By JANNY HU SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER TACOMA -- Of all the compliments hurled in Jeremy Reed's direction, none may be greater than this: He is a Dirtbag. Yes, the key to the Freddy Garcia trade, the player whom Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi insisted be included into the White Sox package all along -- or no deal -- is a receptacle for dirt. He is a dirtbag, as in the Long Beach State University Dirtbags, Reed's collegiate team. And while the name is guaranteed ammunition for hecklers, Reed says it is also the best way to describe his game. "The hard-nosed player, the hard worker -- you do everything you can to win, leave it all out on the field and have fun," the outfielder said. "A dirtbag is definitely a good name for me. Absolutely." The newest Mariners prospect, acquired on June 27 from Chicago with catcher Miguel Olivo and shortstop Mike Morse, played his first game for the Rainiers last night. He was 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tacoma's 7-6 victory over Portland. Heading into the game, Reed was batting .275 with eight homers and 37 RBIs for Class AAA Charlotte. In batting practice, he sent back-to-back pitches over Cheney Stadium's right-field wall. The Dirtbag, it seems, is having little trouble cleaning up in the minor leagues..."
