I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. Jered Weaver Wins Roger Clemens Award  From the Long Beach Press-Telegram (read it here): "Jered Weaver set down the college baseball award season in order on Thursday night. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound righthander from Long Beach State picked up the Roger Clemens Award as the top pitcher in college baseball at a cremony in Houston to cap a string of honors he's seized this summer. The Clemens Award came two days after Weaver won the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top college baseball player. "That was the greatest moment of my life,' Weaver said of the Golden Spikes Award. "Now this moment is even greater. It's amazing. I never thought something like this would happen.' In prior weeks, Weaver has grabbed the Dick Howser Award and Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year honors. Weaver beat out J.P. Howell of Texas and Wade Townsend of Rice to win the Clemens Award, which was previously called the R.E. "Bob' Smith Award. "All of these guys had great years,' said Clemens, who has won six Cy Young Awards and currently pitches for the Houston Astros. "Obviously, I knew Jeff (Weaver, a Dodgers starting pitcher) and he told me about his younger brother before. I've had the opportunity to talk with the J.P. and Wade as well. They all have a lot of character, will and desire.' Jeff Weaver was a teammate of Clemens with the New York Yankees. The award was selected in a national vote by all Division I coaches. Weaver was drafted in the first round by the Angels with the 12th overall pick, although he has yet to ink a contract with the team. Weaver set school records for strikeouts in a season (213) and a game (17) and tied the school mark for consecutive victories (14). His 213 strikeouts are the sixth-most for a single season in NCAA history."
