I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Abe Alvarez Makes It To The Show Abe Alvarez, the Dirtbags Co-Big West Pitcher of the Year in 2003, made his major league debut today. Here is the story yesterday from the longbeachstate.com: "From Blair Field to Fenway, Alvarez Called Up Former Big West Pitcher of the Year to Make Major League Debut Thursday July 21, 2004 BOSTON, MA-- Former Long Beach State Dirtbag and current Red Sox farmhand Abe Alvarez (Fontana) is scheduled to make his Major League debut on Thursday at 1 p.m. EST at Fenway Park by starting the first game of a doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles. Long Beach State now has a record 10 former players who have played in the Majors this season. Alvarez is the fifth player over the past two years to make their debut, following in the footsteps of Chad Bentz and Terrmel Sledge with the Expos in 2004, and Bobby Crosby (Athletics) and Mike Gallo (Astros) last season. Alvarez, who just two short years ago was a second team All-American for the Dirtbags, went 8-6 with a 3.53 ERA for Double-A Portland (ME) in 2004. In 19 games, Alvarez tossed 99.1 innings, giving up 100 hits, and striking out 82, while walking just 24. Last year, Alvarez compiled an 0.00 ERA over nine games and 19.0 innings, giving up just two unearned runs at short-season Lowell. Alvarez struck out 19 and walked just two. The 49ers' all-time winningest lefthander, at 23-5, went 11-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 2003. Alvarez was a two-time Big West Pitcher of the Year, sharing the award with Jered Weaver in 2003." And here is a story from SFGate.com today, posted following the game: "Red Sox promote Double-A lefty, designate LHP Anderson for assignment Thursday, July 22, 2004 (07-22) 10:36 PDT BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox purchased the contract of left-hander Abe Alvarez from Double-A Portland on Thursday and designated lefty Jimmy Anderson for assignment. Alvarez, 21, made his major league debut as the starting pitcher in the first game of a day-night doubleheader against Baltimore. Alvarez had 19 starts with Portland, going 8-6 with a 3.53 ERA. He didn't allow a run in 19 innings last season at Class A Lowell, his first professional season. He was expected to be optioned back to the minors after his start. Anderson, acquired from the Chicago Cubs on July 2 for minor league righty Andrew Shipman and a player to be named, allowed four runs in five games with no decisions."
