I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com. Where Are They Now: Former Dirtbag Gordon Sanchez Gordon Sanchez was selected as a catcher in the 10th round of the 1989 draft (250th overall) by the Chicago Cubs out of San Marcos High School (San Marcos, CA). He passed on the opportunity to turn pro, and instead played for Long Beach State from 1990 to 1992, including a trip to the 1991 College World Series. Among his team mates were current Major Leaguers Jason Giambi and Steve Trachsel. In 1992 Sanchez was drafted in the 19th round (522nd overall) as an outfielder by the New York Yankees. His baseball career cut short by an arm injury, he once accomplished a feat not matched for 6 years - on June 26, 1994, while playing for the Albany Yankees (AA Eastern League) Sanchez hit 4 doubles in a game against Binghamton. This piece in the North County Times brings us up to date on where he is now: Ex-baseball pro new athletic director for Vista's Boys & Girls Club
Comments:
Thanks for the comments, Cheryl. $400,000 certainly sounds more realistic! Good luck to Gordon, and to the Vista Boys & Girls Club!
"Where Are They Now: Former Dirtbag Gordon Sanchez" "I'm going to get guys who played pro ball to come and teach." Part of the fees charged for these camps will go to the club. The only requirements for participation in the baseball program will be that the youngster be a club member ---- dues are $50 a year ---- and maintain healthy grades at school."

* Unfortunately actions speak louder than words. Our son was part of the Vista Eagles for 11 months during which we paid $125.00 per month. He also attended camps there for two years. Not once was a "pro", "ex-pro" or any sort near or around that field. * "We'll tutor them, make sure they do their home work, and train them here," As far as teaching and inspiring the kids... If telling them that they are"Pansy-a**es", " Get your F***ing things out of the dug-out! "and walking to the pitcher's mound for a pitching change and telling the 11 year old to "Get your a** in the out field." Or, slamming a bat on the ground so hard that it breaks in two, then proceed to throw the bat on the roof of the dug-out (because the 10 year old kids are not talking to each other about where the play is next) is what Gordon Sanchez means by coaching, inspiring and enjoying the game... well then I guess he has accomplished his dream. His actions have provoked fear in his boys and doubts on our son's dream. "We'll teach the kids techniques and how to play the game," Is this how you were taught Mr. Sanchez? * Mr. Sanchez might want to go back and edit his "Philosophy" on the Eagles web site, because "Employing a positive attitude with all players and using positive reinforcement of mechanical techniques. Placing a strong emphasis on good sportsmanship and mutual respect and support." * These statements are not put to action on the field. * "Where Are They Now: Former Dirtbag Gordon Sanchez" In my humble opinion, Gordon Sanchez is just a different kind of “Dirtbag” * There are good coaches and mentors out there, In my opinion Gordon Sanchez is not one of those . *The Boys and Girls Club and Little Padres should monitor their director/coaches. We wish others better luck. |
