I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. Goldpanning Dirtbags Are Playing In The NBC World Series 
 The Alaska (Fairbanks) Goldpanners have featured 3 Dirtbags this summer - Matt Fitts, Brett Andrade and Brandon Godfrey. The team won the Alaska Baseball League title, and is currently sitting at 3-1 in the National Baseball Congress World Series at Wichita, KS (more below).Matt is 4-2, with a 3.35 ERA, going 43.0 innings (stats through August 7). He's appeared in 8 games, starting 7. Opponents have batted .230, as he struck out 44 and walked 14. Brett has pitched 29.1 innings in 12 appearances, all in relief. His ERA sits at 2.15, and he's earned 5 saves. Opposing batters are hitting .268. Brett has struck out 24 and walked just 7. In limited action (41 at bats) Brandon hit .244 with a .390 slugging percentage (3 triples). Matt and Brett are on the National Baseball Congress World Series roster. After losing game  1 to enter the losers' bracket, the Goldpanners have won 3 straight. [Tournament bracket in pdf]. They now sit 3 victories away from the title game.In their first victory, Sunday over the Las Vegas Devils 12-3, Brett Andrade pitched the final 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 4. [Box Score]. Matt Fitts earned the Goldpanner's 2nd victory Monday, shutting out the Havasu Heat over the final 5 innings. Matt allowed 4 hits and 1 walk, and struck out 4. [Box Score]. The Goldpanners play the Clarinda (Iowa) A's at noon (Pacific) today.
