Welcome

Welcome to Dirtbags Baseball blog! I was introduced to Long Beach State baseball in 2002 when my nephew, Neil Jamison, joined the team (and university) as a freshman. I started the blog in March of 2004, and generally discuss the team, current players and those that have moved on to professional baseball - as Neil has done in the San Diego Padres organization. Living in San Diego County, and with Neil moving to the next level, I won't be attending as many Dirtbags games. But, mostly from a distance, I'll remain a Dirtbags fan. I welcome tips on stories and information concerning the Dirtbags (current, past and future). I can be contacted at dirtbagsfan@yahoo.com.

Former Dirtbag Steve Trachsel Close To Coming Off DL

From MLB.com:
Trachs back? Steve Trachsel is about to hit the century mark.

The Mets starter aims to throw 100 pitches in his next rehab start for Double-A Binghamton -- the first time he'll do so since having back surgery in March. Trachsel said his arm feels a little bit better each time out, and that he hasn't experienced any issues with his back during his three rehab starts thus far.

"The past few weeks have been a lot better, having more of a regular five-day routine like I'm used to," Trachsel said.

Trachsel was rested two additional days after his last start, which Minaya said was intended to line him up with the Mets' rotation. Minaya said Trachsel's target date to start for the Mets could be Aug. 16 or 17 against the Pirates.

Manager Willie Randolph wouldn't commit a rotation spot to Trachsel just yet, saying that he'll decide how to use the righty once he's ready to pitch. Until then, Randolph has only two goals for Trachsel: "Just be healthy and have his arm strength up where he can give us a quality start."

Trachsel's working on doing exactly that, but his competitiveness and team focus won't let him turn a blind eye to winning games for the Minor League clubs he starts for.

"There's definitely juice going, but you're kind of going out there a little blind because you don't know their hitters [and] haven't worked with the catchers all that much," Trachsel said. "You're trying to work on the things you need to work on to get back, but at the same time the games count for them."

The games count for the Major League Mets as well, and they're counting them down until they get Trachsel back.
Steve has made 2 starts for the Advanced Class A St. Lucie Mets, going 6.2 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run for a 1.35 ERA. He struck out 5 and walked 1. Most recently, he made a start for the AA Binghamton Mets, going 5.0 innings, yielding 4 hits and 3 ERs (5.40 ERA), while walking 4 and striking out 4. His minor league rehab stats are here.
